MARE.20
Materials and Techniques for the Restoration of Monuments
Compatibility, Durability, Sustainability and Economy in Retrofitting Heritage Structures
30 August - 11 September 2020, Archaeological site of Dion, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, GREECE

Background

The society awareness about monumental heritage preservation has been in general increased internationally, because of the high recognition of the "values" associated with the civilization of human genius and the economy related to cultural tourism.

The value of a monumental structure or area is increased after its preservation. However, the cost of restoration projects is relatively high and the longevity of the heritage integrity after repair interventions is often questionable, because of the application of incompatible materials, which create secondary damage problems.

Therefore, the repair materials should be designed and tested to be the most compatible, durable, sustainable and cost effective among the available alternatives.

To succeed in this holistic process of combined principles, a knowledge background is required concerning both historic materials' technology and modern materials' science and advances. Futhermore, experience from practise and on site applications is of paramount importance to conclude about an appropriate repair material.

MARE courses enhance participants' skills for designing, testing and applying repair materials and techniques, according to the holistic process.

After the success of MARE.14 and MARE.17, as well as the increased interest of relevant scientists and professionals MARE.20 is announced.

MARE.20 is postoponed to 2021

Dear participants of MARE.20
Under the unprecedential facts of epidemic we are still experiencing, we are obliged to transfer the implementation of MARE.20 to the next year 2021. We made great effort to prepare all details for the convenient stay of MARE.20 participants near the archaeological site of Dion at the foot of Olympus mountain.
We are pleased with the already sent applications but we cannot guarantee the health safety of students coming from countries all over the world, in which the rate of epidemy is different.
MARE is not a simple seminar. It is a site specific educational project. For 15 days we work together with students on site and in laboratory, exchanging spontaneous knowledge and experience to understand in depth the behavior of Historic Structures and be able to design repair materials for their restoration.
Therefore we decided to renew our appointment for the next year. You are kindly asked to follow our site www.mare20.com for news and announcement of the MARE.21 date.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee
