Interdepartmental Program of Postgraduate Studies on the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments
School of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

The Program offers  two directions:
Direction A:    “Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Architectural Monuments”
Direction B:   “Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art and Mechanisms”

The guiding philosophy of the Program is to ensure that its postgraduate students have sound foundations, knowledge, method and principles that will enable them to follow a path of continuous education and improvement coupled with a creative innovational spirit.

The procedures applied in order to evaluate the responsiveness of the Program to its goals regard
·  the evaluation and revising of the content of the syllabus (when necessary)
·  the evaluation of available means
·  the evaluation of reaching staff and their training qualifications

The IPPS is governed by the Special Interdepartmental Committee whose members are elected by the Special Assemblies of each of the Faculty of Engineering Schools.
The SIC elects the Program’s Director for a two year term.
The evaluation of the responsiveness of the Program includes members of the Departments participating in the Program, postgraduate students and people collaborating with the Program both from Greece and abroad.

Since 1998 there have been 1182 applications and 353 admissions (both directions).
Two hundred and seventy two students have graduated up to date.Approximately 100 graduates are currently employed in organizations and public entities relevant to their postgraduate specialization. It must also be noted that it has come to our attention that a number of students, mainly from neighboring counties, have also been employed in similar organizations in their countries.

Instituto Centrale per il Restauro (Rome), Opificio delle Pietre Dure (Florence), Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (Amsterdam), Hugarian National Museum (Budapest), School of Conservation (Copenhagen), Universita di Bologna (Bologna) and Unversidad de Oviedo (Oviedo) Instituto Centrale per il Restauro (Rome), Opificio delle Pietre Dure (Florence), Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (Amsterdam), Hugarian National Museum (Budapest), School of Conservation (Copenhagen), Universita di Bologna (Bologna) and Unversidad de Oviedo (Oviedo)
While this program was unfolding, through a series of international seminars and workshops organized, a European proposal for a studies curriculum leading to a doctoral degree in restoration-conservation of monuments and works of art has been developed.
The contribution of our program’s professors and teaching staff to the development of this curriculum has been definitive and widely recognized by all our partners. The basic principles on which the structure of our postgraduate studies program, the laboratory support of courses by School laboratories as well as student Interdisciplinary projects were founded have gained international recognition and acclaim. The expertise already accumulated in our own postgraduate program has been put to good use in the effort to optimize the structure of the European Curriculum.
Following this, our IPPS instructors were invited to continue participating as partners in realization of the EC-Curric within the framework of a new European program EPISCON (European PhD in Science for Conservation) 2005 – 2009, coordinated by the University of Bologna.
